On the shock Alopecia can deliver
When you first get this thing, it’s a shock to a lot of people. Unless you’re a dude like me, who has frequently shaved his head, even with a head full of hair, for convenience. Typically it’s for some sport, like swimming or Jiu Jitsu. Could be for travel or some other atypical reason. But if you’ve purposefully been shaved completely bald before, the shock can be somewhat lessened. But even the lack of shock can generate some fun sometimes.
My CFO hadn’t been up to the NYC office in a while. He was typically in our Atlanta office. So when he saw me, he was a little bit taken aback by just how bald I was now. Usually, I had some peach fuzz and a goatee. Now, I was almost an egg. Baby Face Finster, my friend started calling me. And this was around the time that I had run the NYC Triathlon.
“Man, you’re really getting into this triathlon thing. You shaved everything.”
My response was pretty matter of fact.
“Uh….. No. I have alopecia. All my hair fell out.”
The look on his face – priceless.
